Looking for the best place to buy books and bolster your home library? Read about how Better World Books helps build your home library on a budget while also promoting literacy around the world and keeping books out of landfills.
We are frequent visitors to the library and always have at least a couple dozen books checked out. I’m a bag fan of the library (so much so that I sit on the Board of Trustees of our local library), and I know I can find almost any book I want within our county’s collection. I may have to wait a few days or a couple of weeks, but I rarely have trouble finding a particular book I want to read.
Although the library could fill our need for books, I think it’s nice to have a small collection of our own books that we always have on hand. I like that we can take as long to read them as we please. I feel more comfortable taking them on vacation without risking loss of a book we don’t own. And the boys love having some books they can truly call their own.
So far, I’ve tried to make our home library collection for the boys one of classic and high quality picture and young reader books that we would be happy to read time and again. Then, they can use the library to fill in the gaps, choose lower quality books that I don’t necessarily want to buy but they want to read once or twice, and continue to explore new books being added to the library shelves.
Buying Used Books to Promote Literacy with Better World Books
To build our home library, I’ve relied almost exclusively on used book sellers. I bought some books from local secondhand stores, a bunch from the annual book sale hosted by our local school district, and the majority from Better World Books.
I picked up all of these books from Better World Books and remember many of them from my own childhood.
Better World Books collects and resells used books to raise money for literacy programs around the world and also keep great books out of landfills. They can tell you a bit more about their story:
Better World Books shares a host of videos to showcase the life of a book once it enters the Better World Books Cycle as well as highlight the social, financial and environmental impacts of using a company like Better World Books instead of some of their other online bookseller alternatives.
Reading Open Minds and Opportunities
Reading expands our perspectives and helps us understand the world. Reading is also one of the best gifts we can give to our children to prepare them for school and life. Reading opens up doors to new worlds literally and intellectually.
Additionally, reading is a simple activity we can do together as a family that doesn’t result in clutter, mess or loads of “stuff” hanging out around house.
Next time you’re in search of a book, be sure to make Better World Books your first stop. It’s a great way to find your books and do a whole lot of good at the same time.
