Close your eyes and envision a third grade me sitting in an elementary school desk wearing multi-colored florescent stretch capris, an oversize florescentT-shirt knotted on one side at my waist, my hair pulled up in a high side ponytail, and two pairs of layered florescent socks tucked inside my Keds. Keep that visual in your mind, open your eyes and… today I bring you the thirty-something version of that outfit twenty years later. No side pony for me, but the teeny boppers certainly rock them today. My shirt isn’t tied, but think about all the bloggers who use that trick on a regular basis. All these trends returned with a vengeance.
We all know fashion, in a sense, recycles it’s best (and sometimes worst) moments. I realized I was starting to get old when I began seeing “new” trends that were simply reincarnations of trends from my younger days. With the rebirth of 80’s fads not long ago, I experienced my first moments of “deja vu” but I was fairly young and far from setting trends at that age (or any age really, as I’ve shared previously). The neons of the early ’90’s have really kicked my feelings of being old into high gear. I remember tennis players wearing all sorts of neons, and I have vivid recollections of my favorite blinding florescent outfits that I wore to shreds in elementary school. And now… they’re back. In so many ways, life comes full circle. Fashion always seems to be one of the fastest to return to previous iterations. It wastes no time reminding me that I’ve been around for a while – long enough to rock the trend, watch it die, and rock the trend again. Cheers to neons!
