Hmmm… colored tights at the office. Can I pull it off? What colors can I wear? How do I make this work for work?
Although it may be fashion faux pas in some offices, colored tights fly in just about any business casual office these days. Being a big fan of color, I have a drawer full of different colored tights. Certainly, a good portion of the tights are black, gray and brown. But even though I’m in a conservative office environment, I can still comfortably sport dark colored tights in many shades.
I likely wouldn’t wear brighter colors like pinks and bright blues or cherry reds. They’re a little much for my office. But being a frequent experimenter with dark muted tights at work, let’s talk about some tips to make colored tights work for work.
Start Experimenting with “Bold” Colors
Remember the colors from your “bold” crayola box in elementary school? This coveted box included colors like navy, burgundy, dark teal, eggplant, and even mustard (which I can wear when I’m careful). These darker colors are a good place to start when experimenting with colored tights in a business casual work environment. They’re a bit safer and won’t draw quite as much attention or look as casual as the aforementioned pinks and bright blues.
Pair With Boots for a More Subtle Effect
Often when wearing colored tights, especially those in more adventurous colors, I prefer to wear boots instead of booties or heels. The boots cover more of my legs so the colored tights don’t make such a loud statement. It seems to tone down the “talking of the tights.”
Choose a Color Already in Your Outfit
Although a complementary color might match your outfit, it will also add more “boldness” to an already colorful and loud outfit. Choose a color or tone already incorporated into another piece, like the top or bottom that you’re wearing, to help the color blend with the outfit instead of compete with colors already present. In this outfit, you see I chose burgundy tights with burgundy already a prominent color in my floral blouse.
These certainly aren’t hard fast rules. I’m not even sure those really exist in fashion anymore. But they do hopefully offer a good starting point for those curious minds intrigued by tasting the rainbow of tights.
What do you think? Do you rock colored tights at your desk? What makes them work for you?
