Power On Chief Mom Officers. We’ve Got This!

Some moments scream “working mom.” They may not all look alike, but we’ve all had them. A couple of weeks ago, I definitely embodied the “balancing act” in my kitchen.

As we packed the boys up for school, I remembered just before leaving that they needed to bring a snack for the afternoon to share with the class. In our cabinets, we had… nothing.

I took the boys to school and headed right back home. It was time to whip something up.

Work in the Kitchen

Oven on, I parked my laptop on a flour-filled counter and scooped out a tray of dough for these famous (according to me) pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. As they baked to perfection, I responded to email and continued to build out my latest project for work. 7 minutes passed, I pulled the cookies out of the oven to cool, and repeated the process. I continued until I sat in front of a full batch of cookies that anxiously awaited being attacked by preschoolers.

Luckily, I didn’t have any significant meetings that morning, and I have a job (and a boss) that offers great flexibility to work from home. The flexibility of my job hugely contributes to the success of the “home vs. professional” balance that M and I have found for our family.

Wearing Lots of Hats

For many working moms, we take on a lot of commitments and wear a host of different hats. While we’re often choosing among many good options (family, a fruitful job, etc..) and fully appreciate that goodness, it can be really hard to turn things down.

We take on too much. We make too many plans. We say yes to too many people. But in the end, we make it work. We find a way. And if we regret overwhelming ourselves, hopefully, we reflect and learn from our mistakes.

That morning, in particular, I didn’t feel like I over-committed. Things like this don’t happen often for us (thank goodness), and I’m pretty good about saying no when it matters. But we do end up having to juggle competing responsibilities to balance the pull of our family and the pressures at work.

We’ve Got This

I made it. And I’m sure you could tell a few similar stories you survived. Hopefully, in the end, we all get to laugh about it.

Power on, Chief Mom Officers. We’ve got this!
