Growing up, I rarely wore dresses. It was an epidemic in my family of five sisters.
No boys? … Nope, five girls.
Awww, your poor Dad. … Eh, he kind of raised us like boys.
Ok. Glad I got that out of the way, because I know you would have asked. I think I’ve had that conversation about 7,513,456 times in my life.
About the “anti-dress” epidemic, I even had two sisters that entirely refused to wear dresses under any circumstances. They played with ninja turtles and micro machines and played sports like animals. Today, they both wear dresses, but I’m pretty sure both still refuse to wear pink.
On the infrequent occasion one of us actually needed to wear a dress for something, there was a pretty good chance we had to run out to the store to buy a cheap dress that we kind of liked and likely never wore again.
My pants run continued well into my professional years. I spent much of my first five years in the workforce in black or gray pants and cardigans. Once in a while, I ventured into brown pants, but I didn’t wear warm colors often so I didn’t have much to wear with them (or so I thought at the time, at least).
A move to Chicago from our former Philadelphia stomping grounds meant I no longer drove to work every day but walked a little over a mile each way, rain or shine. I spent many a morning cramming my pants into rain and snow boots before finally realizing slipping tights into boots proved much easier!
Hindsight is 20/20 right?
Around the time I began investing in dresses, I also started blogging. We’ll call it my fashion revolution (which has only brought me to today, so I have a LOT of revolution still to go before I’m in the clear). Needless-to-say, I now own over fifty dresses and almost never wear pants. All those years in pants… what was I thinking?! Pants are perfect for some, but I’ve definitely become a dress person. In fact, I’d guess that most people are either “Pants” or “Skirts/Dresses.”
