How To Make A Simple DIY Upcycled Bird Feeder With Kids
Here’s a simple spring or summer project to try with kids. Make an easy DIY upcycled bird feeder with kids using an upcycled container, some duct tape, and a few other supplies. Then enjoy watching with your kids as a host of wild birds visit to snack.

Spring is springing (and the birds are waking us up each morning with their tweets and songs). But I don’t so much mind because it means it’s time to get outside and enjoy the warmer weather and longer days. I’m always here for sunsets past 5 pm!
A few years ago, we made these super simple DIY upcycled bird feeders. They require some very basic materials, and they brought a ton of birds to our yard. You can probably make them with things you have at home (though you may have to buy the birdseed if you don’t have that on hand).
We were so surprised to see how many birds came up for a snack! It was so cool to see all the different types of birds in our yard.
How To Make A DIY Upcycled Bird Feeder With Kids
You’ll need a few supplies to get started on your DIY upcycled bird feeder. I expect you have many of them at home already, but here’s the list.
Supplies For DIY Bird Feeder
- Wild Bird Seed
- Duct Tape
- Wooden Sticks
- String / Twine
- Hole Punch
- Scissors or Razor Blade
- Waterproof Carton or Box (something like a box for stock/broth or soup)
Instructions For DIY Bird Feeder
To get started, gather up your supplies. Cut off the top of the carton or box. Be sure not to make the bottom too deep or the birds won’t be able to reach the bird seed at the bottom.
Allow the kids to cover the box with duct tape to their heart’s desire.
Punch holes near the top of the box on each of the four sides. You will use these to hang the upcycled bird feeder.
Next, cut slits through the middle of the box on both sides and push the wooden stick through the slits. The birds can sit on these sticks to eat.
Tie the twine through each of the holes, and then tie each of the twine pieces together at the top.
Lastly, fill the feeder with birdseed, hang it up, and enjoy watching all the birds snack on the seeds.
