What a difference a pair of heels can make! Today’s outfit is a lesson in pairing pieces with the right shoes, especially when considering your body type.
You often see fashion gurus and models sporting midi dresses with oxfords or other types of flat shoes. This works well for women who are six feet tall. But as is often the case when replicating runway fashions, be sure to take a look in the mirror to assess how a particular trend or style works for you body.
Honestly, I almost didn’t post these photos. Then I reminded myself that I write with the intent of showcasing real style and real lessons for everyday women. In an effort to dress down this La Fille Colette midi dress (which I love), I paired it with a faux leather jacket and ankle boots. Just a few moments of reflection made it clear that a midi dress and I get along much better in a pair of stiletto heels, and I’ve got photos to prove it.
Not long ago, I wore this dress on a warm fall day with nothing more than a pair of simple black heels. As the weather got colder, I threw a black turtleneck and black tights under the dress with a pair of stiletto ankle booties. The heels elongated my legs and made the proportions of the dress appear reasonable with the rest of my body. Not so much the case with these boots.
What’s the lesson in all this?
First, own a full-length mirror so you can reflect (no pun intended) on how the whole outfit fits from top to bottom.
Second, keep in mind the proportions of your body when picking out styles for you. (You can read more on creating balanced proportions from a recent post I shared.)
A midi dress (or skirt) appears to shorten legs. If you’re particularly tall or have long legs, a midi skirt might be a great way to balance the proportions of your body. If not, however, be sure to throw on some heels. The leg lengthening from the heels helps offset the leg shortening from the midi skirt, and you’re back on track to having those desirable even proportions so pleasing to the eye.
