Got big plans for Black Friday shopping?
While I have shopped on occasion on Black Friday, I’ve never woken up absurdly early to hit the stores with the mad rush of shoppers. And I’ve definitely never shopped on Thursday night, a recent trend that kind of makes my stomach churn.
Still following the guidelines of my 90/10 Socially Conscious Style Challenge, I actually don’t shop at brick-and-mortar stores much at all anymore. I purchase nearly all my clothes online.
This year, consider sparing yourself the Black Friday crowds and get your shopping started at an online outlet like thredUP. If you’ve been around for a while, you know this is one of my favorite online secondhand shops. While buying for others at secondhand shops might seem odd, it could work depending on the gift’s recipient. Let’s be honest though. Plenty of Black Friday shopping ends up being for ourselves, so replace that shopping with an online secondhand outlet, at the very least.
They’re offering free shipping on all orders for the holidays, so check it out! Use this link, and get $20 off your first order. (It’s my affiliate link, but I won’t be upset in the least if you decide not to use it.)
All of the outfits above include pieces from thredUP. Pop on over to the original posts (linked to above) to see which items I purchased secondhand.
While these online shops likely won’t fill all your shopping needs, every little bit helps. Where it makes sense, shop secondhand to save some loot and extend the life cycle of each piece you buy. Head online instead of to physical stores (secondhand or otherwise) to be the small step that encourages fewer retailers to make their employees work insane hours on holidays (particularly that Thanksgiving day garbage).
I worked on Black Friday growing up, when I worked in retail, and didn’t really mind. But to work on the actual holiday?! Can’t we take a break from consumerism for one hot second?
I’m still working on ideas for those on my gift list and we’ll be out of town with family on Thursday and Friday. So I doubt I’ll shop-til-I-drop this week. In fact, I’ll be playing some tennis with my mother-in-law and taking our older son to his first professional hockey game on Black Friday. (He’s super excited, which is so awesome.)
What’s on your Black Friday docket?
