A cold winter morning with frost-covered windows meets my sleepy eyes as my alarm chimes and I roll over to get out of bed hit the snooze button. (Hahaha. I never get out of bed the first time my alarm goes off, who am I kidding).
Cuddled up in my bed, J laying next to me because he ends up in bed with us more mornings than I’d like, I pull up the blankets and grab my phone to check the weather. My eyes half shut, app finishes updating and informs it feels like…
Negative Eleven?! Damn it, Winter. I’m not cool with this!
So I lay in bed a little while longer avoiding exiting my warm cocoon of covers. Denial? Procrastination? Avoiding the inevitable? D. All of the Above? Yep – Definitely D, All of the Above.
Eventually I lumber out of bed to start my day. Our chaotic morning progresses somewhat as usual. When it’s time to finally throw on some real clothes, something acceptable for an office environment, I realized it’s time for some basic black. A black shift dress under a black cardigan with black tights and black ballet flats stumble their way onto my body. Does a business casual outfit get easier and more cliche than that?
Fighting the fierce frozen forces of Old Man Winter, I bury my body under layers and layers of fleece, shearling, down, faux fur, and any other form of warmth I can find to trudge through the snow and salt of downtown Chicago. Unrecognizable in gear, I’m off. Warm office, I’ll see in 25 minutes.
